SUVs

I have been listening the RTE documentary on One podcast lately and I found a very interesting documentary about the SUVs in Ireland, but it also can be applied to a country like Spain.

It was a very decent documentary showing the two sides of the new, weighing up the pros and cons of the SUVs in a world so damaged with the global warming. It's very unrealistic that while in the rest of Europe these vehicles have reduced their sales in Ireland it's the only place in the continent where their sales have increased.

I feel quite sad to hear that the Irish people are so in this fashion. Last time I was there, two years ago, I didn't see so many of these vehicles in the cities, but the same happened in Spain. When I returned from Liverpool here people started to drive this monstruous vehicles.
I think that these kind of vehicles parents, the old Jeeps, Nissans or Land Rovers were built for a purpose, to drive outside the road, in the countryside. And they spent most of their lives in rural areas.

But we are living a phenomenon of bigger cars driving in our cities which the only time they have been outside the road it was because they were in the pavement of any street where they had to park them. The concept of SUVs is a complete disaster in terms of environment, economical and safety. Enviromentally the SUVs are more pollutionists than any other car. They waste a lot of petrol when driven in cities, and for most of the users of these vehicles they do not drive for more than 50 kilometres per day, mostly in cities, making our cities more polluted than ever. Economically speaking they aren't any bargain. Paying a car like this is like having a motgage that can rise up to 100000 euros, plus the petrol that doubles the consume of a normal car, and the devaluation of the car: It's said that a SUV doubles the devaluation of a luxury car of its price.

Let's talk about safetyness apart. I agree that for drivers they feel much more comfortable and safety inside a X5 than in a Smart, but imaging a pedestrian that crosses the road and gets knocked down by a SUV, he will be demolished in his whole body when by a Clio or Astra he will only get his legs damaged. Let's no speak if the pedestrians are kids, just imaging the scene with a SUV...demolishing.

That's why I'm supporting bigger taxes and restrictions to these kind of vehicles, it's an uneccessary fashion that only causes problems. And I don't wanna talk any more about this shit. If someone wants to expand his mind in this aspect I refer you to: http://shitedrivers.com/

By the way, you can hear the docu-show here or download from the podcast.
